Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is now considered the gold standard for treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It uses bilateral stimulation, usually rapid horizontal eye movements, but sometimes alternating tones in either ear or pulses in either hand to help start processing in parts of the brain that are stuck. It is based on the idea that trauma is processed emotionally and cognitively in different areas of the brain and that the emotional processing can get stuck even as cognitive processing continues. This leads to the phenomenon where additional things that you learn or insights that you have don’t change how you feel. I have recently added this technique to my bag of tools for treating PTSD and also find it helpful for other “stuck” areas.
